The third round of the Blancpain GT Series Asia took place at the legendary Suzuka Circuit in Japan, from the 30th June to 1st July.
During Friday’s free practice sessions, Sandy and his teammate Shae Davies familiarized themselves with the new tire compound issued by the Organizers, and together with the team they worked on setting their Porsche 911 GT3 R up for qualifying.
Qualifying took place on Saturday morning. Shae drove in Qualifying 1 managed to get 4th position for Race 1. Sandy qualified in 10th position for Race 2.
Race 1 took place on Saturday afternoon. Shae had a great start from 4th and was able to get up to 3rd place when he handed the car over to Sandy. The pair had an amazing pit-stop and Sandy could overtake his old teammate from last year Martin Kodric in his Lamborghini Huracan GT3 and managed to get up to 2nd place overall. Sandy was chasing the leading Audi R8 GT3 the whole race. He would finish just on the tail of the leader with a gap of 0.8 seconds, to claim Shae and Sandy’s first podium of the year and gain 18 points.
Race 2 took place on Sunday morning and again it was a sunny day at Suzuka Circuit. Sandy had a great start from 10th and managed to get up 7th in the first few corners and handed the car over to Shae in 5th position. Because of their success penalty from yesterday, the team had to wait 10 more seconds in the driver change pit stop, which meant Shae exited the pits in 8th place. Shae had a great stint and managed to get back up to 5th place, which is where he would finish. The duo claimed 4th place in the silver class and 10 more points.
